On July 8, 2011 Betty Ford, a former First Lady of the United States of America passed away. Her husband, Gerald Ford, was the 38th President of the United States. Gerald Ford was appointed Vice President when Spiro Agnew resigned from that position in 1973. He became the President of the United States in 1974 when Richard Nixon resigned as President because of the Watergate scandal. She reined as the First Lady from 1974-1977. She was a courageous and powerful woman who was definitely ahead of her time. Betty Ford deserves great honors and recognition for the healing and awareness she brought to the world. She brought awareness to the most denied issues of our time. She brought awareness to breast cancer through her mastectomy in 1974 and was an activist for equal rights, pro-choice, the women’s movement and equal pay. She had the courage to admit her addiction to alcohol and drugs as a public figure despite the disgrace and personal attacks she publicly received. Her battle with alcoholism in the 1970’s led to the opening of the Betty Ford Center that heralded the awareness and healing of alcohol and drug addictions.

She was outspoken on her beliefs of the benefits of psychiatric treatment and spoke candidly about marijuana, and pre-martial sex in an interview. In public response she was called “No Lady” and her resignation was demanded. On opening the Betty Ford Center she wrote two healing books, A Glad Awakening and co-authored Healing and Hope. Where is this woman when we need her in office today? I truly admire her courage to speak out on matters she believed in. She advocated healing even though she would suffer the judgment and verbal attacks from the ignorant public she was trying to enlighten. 

Rock stars Stevie Nicks and Steven Tyler spoke on behalf of Betty Ford. Steven Tyler said, “Betty Ford took a risk at one of the worse times in her life and came forward to share a message of recovery in order to serve others. Her vision, passion and amazing heart led to the Betty Ford Center, the gold standard of treatment facilities. She will be missed, but her work in recovery will live on.” Stevie Nicks said, “As far as I am concerned, Betty Ford saved my life.” She personally told Betty, “If it were not for you Betty I would be dead.”

Maria Shiver said, "Mrs. Ford was a courageous pioneer, a groundbreaking First Lady, and a forceful advocate for anyone suffering from addiction or breast cancer. America fought her struggles with her and learned alongside her. She was brave, outspoken and kind. As a journalist, I had the opportunity to interview her several times and she was just fascinating. She was a wonderful woman who stood up for any human being struggling in the shadows of their personal pain”.

With the arrival and discovery of new planets, asteroids, or comets in our solar system they bring with them the awakening of their symbolism and meaning to our awareness and consciousness. At the time of their discovery their meanings are usually not completely understood until after the effects are processed and experienced.
At the time of the discovery of these planets their characteristics became historically prominent and their precepts came to the forefront of civilization. Their discovery brought their essence to our world.

Uranus was discovered in 1781. This was around the onset of the industrial revolution. Inventions were discovered to make work and trade possible on a global scale. The use of electricity and inventions like the cotton gin were beginning. All this opened the world to mass communications.

Neptune was discovered around 1846. At this time photography was being initially developed, symbolic of Neptune’s creation of illusions that seem real, as in photos or film. This was the onset of screen movies that would connect the world with collective trends and messages.

Pluto was discovered in 1930. At this time the Depression was in full motion. Tyrants of underworld quality controlled the masses. Mafia leaders, gangsters, and dictators like Hitler and Stalin were rampant. The discovery of atomic energy caused mass destruction and the threat of total human annihilation from the end of World War II.

In the 1970s the asteroid Chiron came into our solar system and our awareness. The symbolism of Chiron stems from the Greek myth about the immortal god Chiron, the son of Chronos and Philyra, who was in the form of a horse. The centaur Chiron was a master healer who taught medicine in the arts and science. He made Hercules a special poison arrow, with which Hercules accidentally shot Chiron in the leg. Chiron taught healing but could not find a cure for his poisoned leg. He suffered so much his only wish was that he could die. Chiron has been called the “wounded healer” for he could heal others but not himself. Meanwhile, Prometheus was a man who stole fire from the gods and gave it to mankind. This infuriated Zeus, king of the gods, so he chained him to a mountain top where a vulture ate out his liver during the day but it grew back at night. The only stipulation Zeus gave Prometheus for freedom from his punishment was that he had to get a god to give up his immortality. Fat chance thought Zeus, but he didn’t realize that Chiron came into such suffering that he was willing to give up his immortality for Prometheus.

What is the message of Chiron as it came into our awareness on Earth? In the 1970s healing arts and spiritual healing came into our awareness. For at this time emerged the chiropractic healing and holistic medicine came into consciousness and was even named Chiropractic after the Greek god of healing. Yet the deep meaning of the mythology of Chiron, the wounded healer, and Prometheus surfaced as the healing of alcoholism for the symbology of the liver being eaten out at night but growing back during the day symbolizes alcoholism. But as Prometheus was released by the sacrifice of Chiron so too was there a healing from alcoholism in the 1970s for the very first rehab centers were built thanks to the awareness brought forth by Betty Ford. She was the founder of the Betty Ford Center for addictions. Yes, they had 12-step programs before but the awareness Betty Ford brought to the issue of alcoholism brought healing and recovery to the forefront and saved many lives.

The day I heard of the passing of Betty Ford I also heard an astronomer proudly announce that the asteroid Vesta was now visible in the night sky. Vesta is a large asteroid which is part of the asteroid belt which is thought to be a broken up planet between Jupiter and Mars. Since Vesta is not a new discovery but is now visible means it is not new but now we are able to see the energy on earth pertaining to Vesta. The symbol for Vesta is the Vestal Virgin who is the keeper of the eternal flame. She protects and preserves this flame. She is a high priestess who possesses the power for sacred healing, visions and prophecy, She teaches that we can cleanse and heal our bodies through our spirit and the power of our mind. She represents the power to heal pain from the past through harnessing the power within symbolized by the immortal flame. Astrologically Vesta indicates our spiritual power within brought forth to heal our issues from the past. It relates to work, devotion, commitment, and sacrifice. It is a sacred healing energy.

At this time that Betty Ford’s work has surfaced to be recognized because of her passing, so too has the feminine healing energy that she represented as the asteroid Vesta is now visible to us on Earth. The healing sacred energy of Vesta who is the keeper of the flame surely describes and symbolizes the work and awareness for healing of addictions through healing pain from the past and the rights for women. For Vesta also heals issues of sexuality, an issue for women’s rights. This sighting of Vesta is a beautiful omen for the healing of all the issues Betty Ford fought to heal within her life and to bring this truth and healing to the world.
