The Vimshottari Dasha System
The beauty of prediction in Vedic astrology is the combination of both the dashas triggered by transits. The dasha system used is called the Vimshottari dasha system. The dashas are the planetary cycles of a life based on the placement of the Moon at birth.- There are nine cycles which include the seven planets, plus the north and south nodes of the Moon (Rahu, Ketu). The outer planets are not used.
- Each cycle has a designated allotment of years that combine to equal a grand total of 120 years.
- The ruler of the ruling planet of each dasha is determined by the 27 nakshatras. Each nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine planets and follows in the same sequential order.
- Where the natal Moon is placed this nakshatra, and the ruling planet of that nakshatra, initiates the beginning of the order of the cycles of life. The planet that rules the main cycle of the dasha is called the maha dasha (major dasha).
- Within this cycle there are sub cycles called the bhukti and antara dasha.
- The ruling planets of the maha dasha and the bhukti are then further referred to in the chart by their house rulerships, dispositors, and the houses they are in. Using transits together with current dashas will prove their predictive value.
Maha Dasha as the Ascendant
- The maha dasha ruler becomes the focal point, then the bhukti, and sometimes the antara dasha rulers can be used. Make it simple, the antara dasha or sub cycles can create more confusion. You want to know what is important! The dasha and bhukti rulers are the most important, and their relationship to one another gives the focus.
- The bhukti will give the main issue occurring at that time. Look to the ruling planet of the maha dasha, what house is it positioned in, and houses the planet rule. These will be a main area of concern during that entire period.
- Look to the bhukti ruling planet, what house is it placed, and what houses it rules.
- What is the spacial relationship of the maha dasha ruling planet and the bhukti ruling planet? You are actually looking at the chart as the maha dasha ruling planet as the ascendant during that period of life. All the other planets and the houses they fall in will make that cycle of life vastly different from other dasha cycles. Specifically the house the bhukti falls in from the maha dasha ruler as the ascendant will give very specific information for that time frame.
How to Predict the Outcome of a Dasha
Nakshatra ruling planets are used for Prediction- Vedic astrology uses the nakshatras like a western astrologer uses the signs in terms of rulership. The nakshatras are all ruled by a planet and this ruling planet is used in prediction for both the results of the dasha periods and the transiting planets.
- The maha dasha and bhukti ruling planet will be analyzed in terms of its house placement and house rulership but the true result this dasha will produce will be based on the planet that rules the nakshatra the dasha ruling planet is in.
- The nakshatra ruling planet of the dasha will be assessed by the house it is in and rules.
Transits (Gochara)
Aspects to be used are:- conjunctions
- oppositions (7/7)
- squares (4/10)
- quincunx (6/8)
- trines (5/9) of Jupiter and Rahu/Ketu
- Mars casts the 8th aspect
- Saturn cast the 3rd aspect
*Most important are the transits of the maha dasha ruler and bhukti
- Apply the transiting planets to the natal planets using the aspects listed. The transiting planets that aspect the natal planet will activate:
- a) The house the natal planet is in
- b) The houses the natal planet rules
- c) The nakshatra ruler (dispositor) of the natal planet. Look to this nakshatra ruler in terms of the house placement and the houses it rules.
- The transiting Planet will cast on to the planet it aspects the quality of its own natal placement, that means it carries with it the energy of its nakshatra ruler and the house the nakshatra ruler is in and rules.
- When a transiting planet enters into a nakshatra ruled by the dasha or bhukti ruler it activates the events involving the dasha. There are 3 areas in the zodiac ruled by the same nakshatra. They are all 120 degrees apart (trine one another). Depending on your dasha ruler when these sensitive zones are activated it will bring good or difficult results depending on the houses the planet rules and is placed.
Outline
- Look at the maha dasha ruler as the ascendant. Where does the Bhukti ruler fall from it?
- Look to maha dasha’s and bhukti’s house they occupy and rule.
- Look to maha dasha and bhukti nakshatra dispositor, what house it occupies and rules.
- Each transiting planet will carry the effects of its natal qualities: 1) House placement 2) House rulership 3) MOST IMPORTANT Nakshatra dispositor, what house it occupies and rules
- Transiting planets apply their energy to the natal planet in transit. Their aspect to a natal planet activates the natal planets house placement, rulers and nakshatra dispositor (the house it occupies and rules).
- When transiting planets enter into different nakshatras they activate the natal planet that rules that nakshatra. Focus on the ruling planets of the dasha rulers.
Examples
Bobby Kennedy
He was shot June 6, 1968, but didn’t die till the next day. Listed are the dasha/bhukti and transits on this day. He was in Jupiter’s maha dasha and Mercury’s bhukti.- During his Jupiter maha dasha Jupiter can be viewed as the ascendant throughout this 16 year time frame. Bhukti ruler Mercury is in the 12th house from dasha ruler Jupiter, indicating loss during this time.
- His natal Jupiter is placed in the 9th house and rules the 9th and 12th houses, indicating his rise at this time.
- Natal Jupiter is in the nakshatra Uttara Ashadha which is ruled by the Sun. The Sun is in the 8th house and rules the 5th house. Natal Jupiter gives the results of the Sun in the 8th house which indicates great changes, such as death, and rules the 5th house which indicates his intelligence and leadership abilities.
- His bhukti ruler Mercury is in the 8th house, and rules the 6th and 3rd houses. The 6th house deals with obstruction and enemies.
- Mercury is in the nakshatra Jyestha which is ruled by Mercury. Mercury is placed in the 8th house. This is like Mercury in its own sign. It is very powerful for 8th house matters such as death.
- The sensitive zones activated are the dasha ruler’s nakshatra rulers. Since he was in dashas Jupiter/Mercury any transiting planets in these nakshatras that rule Jupiter or Mercury will activate an event concerning the dashas house placement, rulers and nakshatra dispositors. On the day of the shooting Saturn and Rahu were in Revati which is ruled by Mercury. This brought out the death inflicting nature of Mercury. The transiting Moon was in Uttara Phalguni ruled by the Sun which is placed in the 8th house. So the Moon was the defining transiting planet that zoned it in on the day that it occurred.

Martin Luther King
The day Martin Luther was fatally wounded 4/4/1968 he was in Mercury/Jupiter.- His natal Mercury is in the 10th house and rules the 6th and 3rd houses.
- His natal Jupiter is placed in his 1st house and rules the 9th house and 12th houses.
- Mercury as the maha dasha ruler becomes the new ascendant during this 17 year cycle. Bhukti ruler Jupiter is in the 4th house from the maha dasha ruler Mercury. Indicating changes with the home, and sometimes the 4th house is referred to as the end of life.
- Maha dasha ruler Mercury is in Shravana which is ruled by the Moon. The Moon is in the 11th house and rules the 4th house. Mercury will give the results of the Moon in the 11th house, which indicates his humanitarian efforts.
- Bhukti ruler Jupiter is in Ashwini ruled by Ketu. Ketu is in the 8th house. Therefore, Jupiter will give the results of Ketu in the 8th house. Ketu’s ruler is Scorpio. So Ketu is like a planet in its own sign in the 8th house.
- Transiting Jupiter was 2 degrees Leo and carries the natal nakshatra ruler Ketu in the 8th energy as it aspects natal planets. Jupiter is exactly quincunx 6/8 natal Sun in the 10th house, also 8 houses away from dasha ruler Mercury. During Mercury’s cycle, Mercury becomes the new ascendant. The Sun rules the 5th house, but the 5th house is the 8th from maha dasha ruler Mercury.
- Transiting Jupiter also aspects natal Saturn. Remember, Jupiter’s aspects carries the energy of Ketu.
- Transiting Mercury the dasha ruler is in the 12th house in Jupiter’s nakshatra. It aspects (square) natal Saturn. Natal Saturn is in Mula ruled by Ketu. Again, Ketu in the 8th house is activated by the applying aspect of Mercury the dasha ruler.
- Sensitive zones are the nakshatras ruled by Mercury and Jupiter because they are the dasha rulers. Transiting Sun, Saturn and Rahu are all in Mercury’s ruled nakshatras. Transiting Mercury and Venus are both in Jupiter’s nakshatra. This activates the potential power of both these planets in the natal chart in terms of their house placement and rulership, but it will especially activate the natal planets nakshatra dispositor and houses the dispositor rules.
- All aspects point to this death producing event.

President James Garfield
On July 2nd 1881 President James Garfield was shot. He died months later from his wounds.During this time he was in Dasha Jupiter/Venus.- His natal Jupiter was in the 5th house and rules the 4th and 7th houses. Jupiter is in Dhanishta which is ruled by Mars. His natal Mars is in his 2nd house and rules the 3rd and the 8th houses. Mars has a dangerous quality ruling the 8th house.
- His natal Venus is in his 1st house and rules the 2nd and 9th houses. Venus is in Hasta which is ruled by the Moon, and the Moon is in the 8th house and rules the 11th house.
- Jupiter’s nakshatra ruler Mars rules the 8th house, while Venus’ nakshatra (Moon) is in the 8th house. Dispositors of the maha dasha ruler and bhukti ruler either rule or reside in the 8th house of death. This depicts the death inflicting event during this dasha sequence.
- Transiting Mars, Saturn and Jupiter all were in the 8th house aspecting his natal Moon. They were in the sensitive zone of nakshatra Bharani ruled by Venus, bhukti ruler.
- Transiting Venus was aspecting natal Mercury and Sun. Venus carries its natal energy of the nakshatra dispositor Moon in the 8th house. Natal Mercury rules the 1st house, plus the natal Sun are both indicators for the physical body.

John McCain was shot down and made a prisoner of war on October 26th 1967
- He was in Dasha Rahu/Venus. Rahu is in the 4th house, in Mula ruled by Ketu, and Ketu is in the 10th house. Bhuktu ruler Venus is in the 12th house in Uttara Phalguni which is ruled by the Sun in the 12th house. The 12th house is of course the house of prison.
- Transiting Mars was conjunct dasha ruler Rahu. Aspects to the dasha rulers take priority over any other transits. Mars sets off the event.
- Transiting Saturn is exactly quincunx the natal Sun 6/8, ruler of the 12th in the 12th. The quincunx 6/8 will always indicate a very difficult event. It is also aspecting natal Rahu and natal Mercury (Ruler of the chart).
- Transiting Rahu and Ketu square the natal Moon, and Rahu aspects natal Sun. Transiting Rahu is in the 8th house.
- Transiting Venus is in the 12th house in Purva Phalguni which is ruled by Venus. Venus brings to him 12th house matters of loss and imprisonment.
- Transiting Jupiter is on the Sun in the 12th. This may indicate that he survived the plane crash and his eventual release, but after 6 miserable years.

After this article was written, a birth time of 6:25pm surfaced for John McCain. This link will take you to information about his natal chart using the 6:25pm birth time.
McCain was released as a prisoner of war March 17th 1973
- He is changing into Rahu maha dasha, Mars bhukti. Natal Rahu is in the 4th house in Mula ruled by Ketu. Natal Mars is in the 11th house ruler of the 8th and 3rd house. Mars is in Ashlesha ruled by Mercury. Mercury is in the 1st house in Virgo, in its own sign of rulership and exalted. Because Mars’ nakshatra is so powerful, Mars’ dasha or transit will bring a good result.
- Mars the bhukti ruler is 8 houses from the maha dasha ruler Rahu indicating a difficult time readjusting to the world.
- Transiting Jupiter (freedom) is conjunct the natal Moon and in the Moon’s nakshatra Shravana.
- Transiting Saturn is in the 9th house aspecting natal Mars. Saturn is also aspecting natal Jupiter and Saturn. His natal Saturn is in Aquarius (own sign) and carries the energy of Jupiter due to is being in Jupiter’s nakshatra Purva Bhadrapada.
- Transiting Venus is exactly conjunct natal Saturn. Natal Venus carries the energy of its placement in the 12th house and its nakshatra ruler Uttara Phalguni the Sun (ruler of the 12th in the 12th house.
- Note transiting Pluto is exactly on his natal Mercury (ruler of his chart). Pluto indicates radical change.

Barack Obama
He won a place in the senate November 2nd 2004.- His Dasha/Bhukti was Jupiter/VenusNatal Jupiter is in the 1st house and rules 3/12 in the nakshatra Uttara Ashadha ruled by the Sun, the Sun is in the 7th house and rules the 8th.Natal Venus is in the 6th house and rules houses 5/10. It is in Nakshatra Ardra ruled by Rahu, and Rahu is in the 8th house.
- Transiting Jupiter and Venus were both in the 9th house in Virgo in nakshatra Hasta ruled by the Moon. The Moon is in the 5th house and rules the 7th house. Transiting Jupiter is casing aspect to (grand trine) natal Jupiter/Saturn and Moon. All 3 planets are ruled by the Sun’s Nakshatra. This grand trine was a defining feature in his win on this day.Transiting Rahu was in Aries in the 4th house and transiting Ketu was in the 10th house. Ketu was exactly aspecting natal Venus, Venus’ nakshatra is Rahu placed in the 8th house. There was a grand cross involving natal Jupiter opposed natal Mercury and transiting Rahu/Ketu forming the grand cross. Mercury is in Pushya ruled by Saturn and Jupiter is in Uttara Ashadha ruled by the Sun. These planets are all angular 1st, 7th,4th and 10th houses. This will create an action packed event and give results. You want to see the 10th house or position activated for political wins.
- The one thing to make note of is the power of the 7th house for it is the 10th from the 10th house, and represents another power house for the career.
below: Barack Obama's Natal Chart with 7:11pm as birth time
(updated information with 7:24pm as his birth time is farther below)

2008 Elections
- Transiting Saturn will be opposed Uranus. The last time they were opposed in the same signs of Saturn in Leo and Uranus in Aquarius, there was one of the most devastating plagues on our planet, killing 1/4th of the planets population, of over 100 million people. Rahu and Ketu will be in Cancer/Capricorn indicating the water. Rahu is poisons and in Cancer can indicate poisons in the water.
- Major transits affect McCain’s and Obama’s chart. Hilary is not so affected. This is why I believe she is not part of this treacherous event. Obama and McCain have exact conjunctions of their natal planets with each other’s charts. Obama’s Sun is McCain’s Mars, both at 19 degrees of Cancer. At the time of the elections transiting Ketu will be exactly on this point of 19 degrees of Cancer.
- Obama’s Venus at 8 degrees of Gemini is exactly conjunct McCain’s Ketu, also at 8 degrees of Gemini. This means they are karmically linked. And Venus rules Obama’s 10th house for career. This can mean McCain will block Obama from winning the Presidency.McCain’s Venus is at 29 degrees of Leo and Obama’s Mars is at 29 degrees of Leo. At the time of the elections Transiting Saturn and Uranus will be opposing this degree mark at 25 degrees of Leo. Transiting Uranus is 25 Aquarius and transiting Saturn is 25 degrees of Leo. McCain also has natal Saturn at 25 degrees of Aquarius opposed his natal Venus.
Transits for Election Day 11/04/2008 11pm

Barak Obama Dashas Jupiter/Moon
- His dasha at the time of the Presidential election in November and the Inauguration will be Jupiter/Moon.
- His natal Jupiter is in his 1st house and rules houses 3/12. Jupiter is in Uttara Ashada which is ruled by the Sun. The Sun is in the 7th house and rules the 8th. His Bhukti ruler the Moon is in his 5th house in the nakshatra Krittika also ruled by the Sun.
- Making the maha dasha ruler the ascendant we get the same chart since his Jupiter is in the 1st house. Bhukti ruler is in the 5th house, a great house for a person that is seeking to be the advisor to a nation.
Transits (Obama)
- Transiting Jupiter is in Sagittarius in the 12th house aspecting his natal Mars. Mars rules houses 4/11. It is in the nakshatra Uttara Phalguni ruled by the Sun. The Sun is in the 7th and rules the 8th house. Jupiter will be transiting his 8th house from the Moon. The bhukti ruler the Moon moves quickly and will be in the sign of Capricorn aspecting his natal Saturn and Jupiter in the 1st house, and Sun/Mercury in the 7th house.
- Transiting Ketu will be conjunct his natal Sun in the 7th house ruler of the 8th, and nakshatra ruler Mercury is also in the 7th house but ruler of houses 6/9. Transiting Ketu brings with it in its transit its natal imprint which is its placement in the 2nd house in Aquarius ruled by Saturn, but its nakshatra is Dhanishta which is ruled by Mars in his 8th house and rules houses 4/11. Ketu in its transiting aspect brings 8th house experiences, which of course can bring death. Ketu is the karaka of death and for it to be exactly on his Sun in the 7th house can mean there is going to be a threat to his life. Another detail I haven’t mentioned is the 2nd and 7th houses are maraka houses, meaning death inflicting. There is a reoccurring theme involving the 2nd and 7th house especially at this point in time. The 7th house indicates his running mate can cause great destruction as well.
- Transiting Saturn is conjunct his natal Mars in the 8th house. Mars is in the Sun’s nakshatra which is in the 7th house, and the Sun is being hit by transiting Ketu.
- Transiting Pluto will be opposing his natal Venus in his 6th house as ruler of the 10th house. Pluto indicates endings and death, therefore death of the career pursuits.
- In his navamsha chart his dasha rulers Jupiter/Moon are in the 9th house together in Pisces. This could give him the presidency but in McCain’s navamsha he has his dasha ruler in the 10th house and Bhukti in the 6th. This will cause him to win. The 10th is the career and the 6th house is defeating opponents.
Transiting Nakshatras (Obama)
- We are looking for transiting planets to be in the nakshatras that rule his maha dasha and bhukti ruler. In his case his dasha planets are Jupiter/Moon There are planets in Jupiter’s nakshatra, transiting Sun, Mars and Moon. Are there any transiting planets in the Moon’s nakshatra? Yes, Rahu is in Shravana ruled by the Moon. This will activate his natal Moon in terms of its placement in the 5th house, and the house it rules the 7th and its nakshatra ruler Sun in the 7th. Rahu gives the result in transit of its natal placement, house ruler and nakshatra ruler. So in this case Rahu gives the result of the 8th house and Ketu (nakshatra ruler) in the 2nd house. This is a dangerous planet for it has the quality of the 8th house of death and the 2nd house, a maraka house indicating death as well. The 8th house is the house of disgrace and can indicate the uncovering of indiscriminate or disgraceful past or present actions that ruin his prospects for the presidency. This is a volatile time for Obama. Looks like he makes some head way but the results can be devastating!

Barack Obama's Navamsha Chart using the 7:24pm birth time.

His navamsha with this new chart represents him well. He has exalted Mercury in the 2nd house indicating his insightful and superb speaking skills. Mars, Venus and Sun in Sagittarius in the 5th house indicate his writing skills and creativity. The 5th house represents books because it is the 3rd house from the 3rd house of writing. Also the absence of the mother is indicated with Ketu in the 4th house. The Moon is in the 9th house ruler of the 12th with Uranus shows how his father was absent from his life. Saturn in the 6th house in its sign of rulership means he will defeat his enemies. But, what bothers me most is he is in Jupiter/Moon dasha period and his Jupiter is in Pisces in the 8th house. I specifically use the navamsha to analyze the results of the dashas.
If you were to look closer at the antara dasha, the 3rd level sub period, he is in Jupiter/Moon/Ketu from November 11th-December 9th. His Ketu in his birth chart is in the 2nd house in Dhanishta and the nakshatra dispositor is Mars in the 8th house. My main bases for prediction in my lecture in Denver at UAC were on the nakshatra dispositors. I sincerely hope the chart of 7:11pm is correct, instead of the new chart time of 7:24pm for the danger is much more apparent in this new birth time.
We are never 100 percent sure of anyone’s exact birth time unless we were there. This also goes for the discrepancy with McCain’s chart. There was recently a TV commercial where McCain's mother, who is well into her 90’s clearly stated she remembered when her son was born….”Why it was 11 am”. This commercial was of course intended to represent that if his 90-year-old mother could remember her son’s birthday over 70 years ago then he is not too old to be President. But I don’t know if I trust this information either. The former memory was 9:00 am. I had rectified the chart to around 9:09 to 9:15 based on the navamsha. The new ascendant with 11:00 am would be Libra. But at the time of being shot down and made a prisoner of war it makes more sense that he would have his Sun, Neptune and Venus in Leo in the 12th house of imprisonment. He was in Rahu/Venus at this time, and Venus is in Purva Phalguni. Purva Phalguni is ruled by Venus, so it is Venus in its own sign, ruler of the 12th in the 12th house. If he had Libra as his ascendant this would be Venus in the 11th house instead of the 12th and that definitely does not fit for this event.
McCain for Election Day, Dasha Saturn/Jupiter and Transiting Nakshatras
- John McCain is in Saturn /Jupiter, Saturn in his 6th house in Aquarius own sign of rulership. Saturn is in Purva Bhadrapada ruled by Jupiter. His natal Saturn will give the result of natal Jupiter in the 3rd house. This gives him enormous will power and drive to fight. Actually the upachaya placements of both Saturn and Jupiter give him the perseverance to win. Upachaya houses give drive, ambition and the ability to win over opponents. The upachaya houses in any chart are 3, 6, 10 and 11.
- When transiting planets are in a nakshatra they activate the other portions in the zodiac ruled by the same nakshatra and any natal planets in this nakshatra. At the time of the elections there are 3 planets transiting the nakshatra ruled by Jupiter. The Sun is in Vishakha, Moon in Purva Bhadrapada, and Mars in Vishakha all ruled by Jupiter. So this gives power to natal Jupiter and Saturn producing a result during its dasha. Saturn is in Jupiter’s nakshatra Purva Bhadrapada.
- Jupiter bhukti, Jupiter is in the 3rd house rules houses 7/4 and is nakshatra Jyeshta ruled by Mercury. His natal Mercury is in the 1st house exalted in Virgo and rules houses 1/10. Are there transiting nakshatras in Mercury ruled nakshatras during this time frame? Yes, Ketu is in Ashlesha ruled by Mercury. Since McCain has his natal Ketu in the 10th house in Gemini ruled by Mercury, in Ardra (ruled by Rahu) transiting Ketu will give the result of the 10th house and Rahu placed in the 4th. Essentially, both dasha rulers are activated by the transiting nakshatras to give a winning result.

McCain’s chart to the Inauguration chart
- Transiting Jupiter will be conjunct McCain’s natal Moon ruler of his 11th house. His Moon is in his 5th house but is in the Sun’s nakshatra and the Sun is in the 12th house. The transit of Jupiter brings its natal 3rd house energy and its nakshatra ruler Mercury which is in the 1st house ruler of 1/10. Jupiter brings success to him. Transiting Jupiter aspects his natal Mercury exactly, ruler of the 10th house. Transiting Saturn aspects his natal Saturn exactly. His Saturn brings with it its natal 6th house placement in its own sign Aquarius, plus its nakshatra dispositor Jupiter in the 3rd house. The transiting Sun conjunct his natal Moon represents a new beginning for him. Additionally, McCain will soon begin his Mercury maha dasha. This is one of his best cycles. Mercury is exalted in the 1st house and has directional strength (dig bala). It is lessened in power by its debilitation in the navamsha, but is still angular there too.
Obama’s chart to Inauguration Chart
- Transiting Jupiter will conjunct his natal Jupiter and exactly trine his natal Moon. The Moon rules his 7th house, and Jupiter rules houses 3/12. Both natal planets are in the Sun’s nakshatra. But with the Sun being conjoined transiting Ketu it seems to be wiped out. Transiting Saturn on his natal Mars will cause great frustration. Mars is in the 8th house rules house 4/11 and is in the Sun’s nakshatra. Ketu on the Sun will block the light, even though he does have great aspects on his 1st house planets Jupiter/Saturn, and Jupiter trining the natal Moon. The Sun as the planet for Presidents is blocked. Additionally there are no great aspects to natal Venus, and Venus does rule his 10th house of career.
Final Verdict
- Major shifts will rock the core of America in this election. Looks like terrorist activity or possible assassination attempts for both men, but more specifically Obama. Because of Obamas’s 7th house the real problem for him may come from his running mate or his wife. This can be the real problem that prevents him from winning.
- The end result will be John McCain will win the Presidency of the United States of America.

"I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt. Only my condemnation injures me. Only my own forgiveness sets me free. How deceived I was to think that what I feared was in the world, instead of in my own mind. Forgiveness ends the dream of conflict. As forgiveness allows love to return to my awareness, I will see a world of peace and safety and joy. This world will change through you. No other means can save it. My forgiveness is the means by which the world is healed, together with myself, let me then forgive the world, that it may be healed along with me. Peace will come to all who ask for it with real desire and sincerity of purpose." -- A Course In Miracles |

My forgiveness is the means by which the world is healed, together with myself, let me then forgive the world, that it may be healed along with me. Peace will come to all who ask for it with real desire and sincerity of purpose." --
